The traditional career path is shifting, change is accelerating — learning and development is vital to the success of individuals and organisations. Yet many haven’t kept pace.

 

Increasingly, the traditional model of a three- to five-year tertiary education spent learning technical skills, followed by a forty year career spent applying and refining them, is no longer serving us.

Established professions are changing and new roles are emerging. Career changes are increasingly commonplace, many requiring considerable reskilling and re-education. Work is in a constant state of flux as routine, repetitive and process-oriented tasks are automated, and roles shift towards providing value in other areas. 


It makes sense to retain and retrain good people with the right base skillset — transitioning them out of redundant roles and reskilling them to fit new positions, rather than adopting a relentless cycle of firing and hiring. 

Whether it’s embracing new ways of thinking, adopting new ways of working, or understanding an unfamiliar system or process, ongoing learning and development is crucial to the success of individuals and organisations. 

But with more change, less time and higher expectations, we need to rethink the learning and development experience — the way we share knowledge to optimise retention and recall.
