WORK
WITHOUT
BOUNDARIES`

The Everyday Massive manifesto for bringing your whole self to work.

For some it’s freedom — feeling untethered from the desk, the office and the 9 to 5. For others it's flexibility — to juggle the complexities of a hectic family schedule. Or it might just be that you want to bring your new puppy into the office to keep a watchful eye on him as he starts to explore life.

Whatever the reason, we all have a need — from time to time, or even all the time — to work without boundaries. And these needs are really just a reflection of our deeper personal values, be it family, freedom, autonomy or life balance.

In a world where the employee experience — the human experience — is a valued part of work life, I am so grateful that the days when we had to don our ‘work personas’ during office hours, seem to be well and truly behind us. For many, bringing our imperfectly human, freedom-loving, flexibility-needing and dog-devoted selves to work is now something that’s celebrated.

Here’s my reflections on what makes ‘work without boundaries’ work, at Everyday Massive … and in lieu of a policy or a procedure, let’s call it our Manifesto — a declaration about our beliefs that ensure our professional and personal values can co-exist.

Connect:

Every day. We put rituals in place to make sure we have team touchpoints to schedule work, collaborate, problem solve, test our thinking and socialise. Corona has forced the work-from-home hand for us too, so we’re also reimagining our employee experience map for virtual.

Trust:

Contributing to good, purposeful work for our collaborators — the thrill of the chase — this is what drives us. Our best work isn’t just confined to the office, or office hours. We trust each other to do our best work from wherever.

Be dependable:

The team can always count on each other to do what’s needed, by the time it’s needed. There’s no leaving each other in the lurch here.

Be flexible:

We can’t promise we’ll meet everyone’s needs, all of the time, but we sure will try.

Think about the impact:

We believe that everyone is well intended. But the best intent can sometimes have unintended impact. So when we’re working from wherever, or whenever, we’re very self-aware of the impact that our needs could have on others.

Assume nothing:

Mis-communication for EM, is like being the plumber with leaking pipes. So we check, we ask, we have the conversations — rather than assume, and we have them face to face (Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, FaceTime, whatever it looks like).

It’s all swings and roundabouts — you give some, you get some. And we like it that way. Work life at EM never fits neatly into 9 to 5. We’re a small company working on a global scale to help our collaborators make a massive impact. We respect balance at work, and in life.
